The Learning Support Academy
The Learning Support Academy ("Academy") is an online, private, secure, branded learning community of practice, providing professional development along with a resources library and peer and expert coaching support to tutors, academic coaches, mentors, counselors and their trainers. Organizations, such as schools and colleges as well as community and commercial tutoring and coaching centers will benefit from lower costs and removing common obstacles to providing game changing student support, while increasing student success, staff engagement and mission alignment. The June 2016 inaugural installation will be for the Manhattan-based Great Oaks Charter Schools foundation, which currently provides daily tutoring to its K-12 students in several states.
Whether one is new to the field, or has an established career in tutoring, academic coaching, training or student support center management, our unique training catalog offers a comprehensive approach to professional development. Each learner is paired with a master trainer who will mentor them through the course. The Crossroads of Learning content, assignments and self-paced study sessions utilize the same brain-based learning techniques found in effective tutoring. In other words, our course allows the learner to grasp the concepts, reinforce insight, and apply new understanding and techniques immediately in their practice.
Tutoring Foundations (100 Level)
A skilled tutor can help a student become a better learner leading to higher GPA and retention (research available). Tutoring Foundations is a series of high-quality and individually mentored tutor training courses. The curriculum was developed in 2007 in collaboration the National Tutoring Association. It is also approved for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) granted by Fielding Graduate University, a national leader in professional development advanced degrees for educational excellence. These university approved, self-paced and research based tutor training courses are available in three modules (Basic, Intermediate and Advanced) and are flexible enough to accommodate new peer tutors as well as experienced tutoring professionals and administrators. Learners may begin working minutes after on-line registration. All course materials and a printed certificate of completion are included in the tuition.
Academic Coaching (200 Level)
A skilled academic coach can help students identify and verbalize answers to not only academic questions, but many others influencing their life-long learning journey. Our courses train tutors, counselors and other staff in effective techniques for guidance and goal-setting, critical thinking, cultural awareness and the emotional intelligence required to support the development of students from all levels and backgrounds. In addition, it emphasizes the relationship aspects of coaching.
Readings and reflective assignments explore a variety of theories and techniques, stressing how coaches can utilize an individualized approach to each student. Participants learn to evaluate students based on their own unique needs, challenges, perceptions, and goals and then facilitate a plan to fit that student. The course is individually mentored and uses real-world issues to reinforce material.
